Oxley is a quiet and stoic tiefling, but when they speak they're very straightforward. They have a very serious demeanor, and can appear a little intimidating — but once you get to know them, they're just a bitter and spiritless nerd. Sometimes they seem to have the personality of a grumpy old man, but despite complaining a lot, and having a fairly cynical view on life, they try to enjoy the little things. They're an introvert, and spend a lot of time inside their own head. They're a good problem solver.
They're deaf since their early teens, but they were born hearing and they get by alright using their voice and reading people's lips and gestures. A lot of the time it takes people a while to realize that Oxley is hard of hearing, and if it's just shorter interactions they might not notice at all — and Ox usually doesn't bring it up because going "yes, I am speaking, and yes I can sort of understand you, but no, I really cannot hear you" is an annoying conversation to have over and over again. After a while it gets exhausting to have to explain to people that just because you can speak and understand what someone else is saying, it doesn't automatically mean that you can hear.
More than anything, it's just annoying when they run into someone else who finds their lack of hearing annoying.
Crosswords, dancing, cacti, chocolate.
Los Campesinos!, Twenty One Pilots.
Mr. Robot, Daria.
They can hear a little bit with the help of their aids, but they still don't hear well enough to make out speech just from their hearing alone; they need to be able to see the other person's mouth, and speech read to understand. However, there's a lot of guess-work involved, and speaking to someone who is also signing is a lot easier.
They weren't born deaf, so they're still able to talk using their speaking voice, and they use PSE rather than ASL.
Honey, their girlfriend, loves to dance — and when they're alone, she makes Oxley dance with her. Ox always pretends to only go along with it reluctantly… but the truth is that they love it. (Even though, in front of anyone else, Ox will deny that it ever happened. As far as everyone else knows, Oxley Doesn't Dance. They're too cool).
They spend a lot of time on their computer.
They own a lot of cacti.
They have a low, monotone voice, and they're a little self concious about accidentally speaking too loud.
They kind of want a cat, but they're too nervous about being responsible for one to go through with it.
They're not thrilled about meeting new people, and often wear headphones just to discourage others from talking to them.
They like comfortable, grungy and sporty clothes in muted or primary colors, and often wear turtlenecks and oversized sweaters half tucked into a pair of high-waisted tartan pants or dark denim shorts.
